History[edit | edit source]

Confucianism is a Chinese ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Kong Qiu (551–479 BCE). Confucianism is a complex system of moral, social, political, philosophical, and quasi-religious thought that has had tremendous influence on the culture and history of East Asia, and stresses the importance of education for moral development of the individual so that the state can be governed by moral virtue rather than by the use of coercive laws.

In the Middle Ages, the pressures exerted by the popularity of Daoism (the other very influential school of Chinese thought) as well as Buddhism led to the deevelopment of neo-Confucianist thought which while refuting Buddhist and Daoist metaphysics, nevertheless borrowed heavily from both religions.
